America also decides, 2024

05/11/24, 6:00 am

For the 2024 U.S. presidential election, many Black Americans are showing strong support for Vice President Kamala Harris. A recent survey found that 77% of Black voters favor Harris, which is higher than the support that President Biden had among this group earlier in the race. This shift highlights Harris's significant backing among Black voters, particularly Black women, who see the 2024 election as crucial for protecting democracy, improving the economy, and combating racism (Pew Research Center) (The 19th).

However, there's also concern within the community about the potential for racist attacks against Harris, especially given the high stakes of this election. The election's outcome is seen as pivotal for addressing systemic issues that disproportionately affect Black Americans.

The next general election in the United States, including the presidential election, is scheduled for November 5, 2024. Congressional midterm elections, which include all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and about one-third of the Senate seats, will also take place on that day.

American elections are significant to the entire world and Black people in general for several reasons:

Global Influence

  • Economic Impact: The U.S. has one of the largest economies in the world, and its economic policies can affect global markets, trade agreements, and international financial stability.

  • Foreign Policy: The U.S. plays a leading role in global diplomacy, military alliances, and international organizations. The outcome of American elections can influence global conflicts, peace negotiations, and humanitarian efforts.

  • Climate Change: U.S. policies on environmental issues have a global impact, as the country is a major player in climate agreements and initiatives to combat global warming.

Importance for Black People

  • Civil Rights: U.S. elections determine policies and leaders that can affect civil rights, racial justice, and equality. The American civil rights movement has had a global influence on the struggle for Black liberation and anti-racism efforts.

  • Representation: The election of leaders who advocate for the rights and well-being of Black communities can inspire similar movements globally, fostering a sense of solidarity and shared struggle.

  • Global Solidarity: Many Black people around the world look to the U.S. for leadership in addressing systemic racism and promoting human rights, and the outcome of U.S. elections can have a ripple effect on global activism.

Overall, U.S. elections have far-reaching consequences that extend beyond the country’s borders, affecting global policies, social movements, and the pursuit of justice and equality for Black communities worldwide.
